Inbound Email Content Filtering
   ESPION PROBABILISTIC REASONING (EPR) ENGINE

The Espion Probabilistic Reasoning (EPR) engine integrates the industry’s leading solution in Artificial Intelligence for a compact, efficient, and highly effective security solution. This unique, proprietary technology allows the Espion Interceptor to learn and adapt to an organizations email flow without slowing or growing over time. This solution has been effectively applied in an email gateway security platform (MX MercuryTM) and has now been adapted to assist organizations with regulatory compliance in areas such as HIPAA1GLBA2 and SOX3.

The EPR engine is hyperseeded (loaded) with collective knowledge of with over one billion known patterns of valid emails and spam. Independent third party testing results show the Interceptor as the industry leader in accuracy and performance.
PROACTIVE vs. REACTIVE - WHICH IS BETTER?

While most companies battle spam with a reactive approach, we prefer using a proactive one. We pre-load MX Mercury with over 2600 unique heuristic tests and a proprietary A.I based reasoning engine before shipping it out to you. These features literally eliminate the need for creating complex rules that only battle spam for a short period. Spam patterns are ever-changing and reacting to spam/security threats using custom rules will only help alleviate the issue temporarily. MX Mercury, on the other hand, adapts to your organization's mail flow and learns various flow patterns. As time goes on, the Interceptor's AI engine only gets more effective while maintaing the same efficiency as it did the day it was installed.

In addition, MX Mercury boasts of having
  • an Intrusion Prevention System (IPS) for securing HTTP/HTTPS traffic
  • concrete protection against directory traversal, database injections and cross-site scripts
  • a pre-installed list of safe/unsafe file attachments
and a whole lot of other very useful and beneficial features.

   SPAM SIGNATURE UPDATES

The EPR engine reduces the need for MX Mercury to perform regular spam signature updates as it is always a step ahead of the game in capturing spam. The EPR engine is the first level of security for inbound email and over 95% of all spam is captured at this level. The other 5% is captured at the second level which involves various heuristic/network tests. These tests are dependent on regularly downloaded spam signatures from trusted sources (which are only a handful given the effectiveness of the EPR engine). Espion absolutely assures and stands behind the trustworthiness of our sources as they are industry leaders in anti-spam signatures.

You can set your network firewall to the following configurations:
  1. Provide the Interceptor complete outbound access to download spam signatures from trusted sources.
  2. Espion analysts will provide you with a list of trusted source host names and IP addresses and you can allow the Interceptor to access ONLY these addresses and block the rest.

2  GLBA - Gramm-Leach-Bliley Act (1999).
3  SOX - Sarbanes-Oxley Act (2002).
